Asset Tracking for a Large Urban University and Community College System

Queralt is currently engaged in a project to install a comprehensive asset tracking system to monitor and control PC assets throughout a large urban university and community college system. The goal of the project is to provide school administration with up-to-the-minute information on computer assets used in classrooms, labs, and other public spaces throughout the entire school system.

The tracking system is currently being piloted in three of the system’s schools with over 2,800 assets, including laptop and desktop PC’s, as well as servers and switches in the school’s data centers being tracked.  The tracking system incorporates door sensors to determine when secure IT closets and storage cabinets are being accessed.

In addition to computer related equipment, the system also tracks defibrillators.  Door tags on the storage cabinets assure the defibrillators aren’t tampered with.  The system is programmed to send alerts to security personnel and first responders whenever a defibrillator accessed.

At a future phase, Queralt will combine functionality provided by the RFID system into the video surveillance system.   With the integration of the RFID asset tracking and video surveillance, unauthorized movements of assets will activate nearby surveillance cameras.   These incidents will trigger alerts that will be displayed on the building security monitoring system and trigger notifications that will be sent directly to security personnel using SMS text messaging.
